Welcome to the first ever Parker PL Lewiz Editorial! This is for those hip hop heads who miss reading about the sport, its players, and the culture.
Where do I start?
What did I miss?
Unless you’ve been under a rock, you know that Drake released ICEMAN. The much anticipated album, along with 2 other simultaneous album releases, HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR, went straight to the top of the charts. Like him or not you can’t deny that Drake is a stimulus package for the entire music industry. Fans and haters alike can realistically generate revenue from their respective opinions on the music for the rest of the year. In this new era of minute long attention spans there really aren’t too many artists today that can dictate a new cycle.
Which leads me to the “allow me to reintroduce myself” Hov freestyle at the Roots Picnic. Poignant and cleverly worded, the display showed that the iconic rapper definitely hasn’t lost a step. However, to those that dislike him or are on the proverbial fence on him, the freestyle may have had the opposite effect of its assumed purpose of settling things or clearing the air. A betting man would wager that there’ll be either another freestyle/song or album dropping around his upcoming concert series so we’ll see what else he has to say.
The last thing I want to talk about this week is the return of Young M.A. I’m a HUGE fan of women that can RAP!!! Hip hop’s a male dominated sport, often filled with unnecessary bullshit and testosterone. So hearing a female that can rap, and rap WELL, is absolutely refreshing!!! There may be a few reasons why you may have fell off the Young M. A bandwagon in the past. It could’ve been her lack of activity recently while dealing with health issues, or the recent records we did hear from her not necessarily hitting the same as some of her past songs. I AM HERE TO TELL YOU TO GET BACK ON THAT BANDWAGON! The version of her that we love has made a triumphant return! Go check out her new album Kween.
